Chroma Booster

Chroma Booster is an interactive public art installation by Matthew Geller, unveiled in 2015 at the pedestrian plaza linking the El Paso Chihuahuas’ Triple‑A baseball stadium with the adjacent Convention and Music Centers in El Paso, Texas—just across from Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua. Rising 55 feet in painted and stainless steel, the sculpture integrates programmable LED lighting with water and mist elements to create a dynamic, ever‑changing environment. Throughout the day, visitors can engage push‑button valves at its base to activate a gentle foot‑cooling spray or stand beneath overhead showerheads for a refreshing mist, while at night the LEDs illuminate its steel collars and drifting vapor in vivid hues.

Designed to respond to the region’s climate and cultural context, Chroma Booster operates seasonally from March through October, offering both relief from desert heat and a vibrant gathering place. Commissioned by the El Paso Museums & Cultural Affairs Department Public Art Program, it has since become a celebrated landmark, recognized for its fusion of art, technology and environmental interactivity. By inviting hands‑on participation and transforming ordinary Plaza space into a multisensory spectacle, Chroma Booster exemplifies how public art can foster community connection and redefine shared urban landscapes.
